Scotland Only - Reauthorisation of Serial Prescriptions (CMS)

Cegedim Healthcare Solutions has been made aware of instances where Independent Prescribers (i.e. Non-Medical Prescribers) are using Vision 3 prescribing functionality to inappropriately attempt to reauthorise serial prescriptions (CMS) or where an Independent Prescriber may have been inadvertently selected during the Reauthorisation process. This functionality has not yet been enabled in the clinical systems. Issuing of prescriptions with an Independent Prescriber as the Authoriser is currently restricted to standard Acute or Repeat scripts (AMS) in the clinical system as per Scottish Government Circular PCA2022(M)11_PCA2022(P)23.pdf (scot.nhs.uk). Therefore, if an Independent Prescriber attempts to reauthorise a serial prescription in Vision 3, the clinical system will generate a new repeat prescription instead.

This is a reminder to make GP practices in Scotland aware that Independent Prescribers (i.e. Non-Medical Prescribers) cannot be the authorising/responsible prescriber for Serial scripts – this must be a GP. Local processes should be followed to ensure this is the case.

Additionally, it has been identified that when converting a serial prescription to a repeat prescription, the original dosage instructions are being replaced with the standard default instructions for the product – see separate communication. The selection of an Independent Prescriber on a Serial Prescription will result in this conversion and change to the default dosage instructions. To prevent inadvertent selection of an Independent Prescriber it is recommended the user uses the drop-down list to find the appropriate GP.
