Cegedim Healthcare Solutions has been made aware of an issue relating to pregnancy-related prescribing warnings not displaying in Vision Anywhere when prescribing drugs to pregnant patients. For example, Ramipril - contraindicated in pregnancy. This issue occurs as a result of the Vision Anywhere pregnancy algorithm not correctly determining pregnancy status where certain codes have been used to record pregnancy in prior encounters in Vision Anywhere.
This presents a clinical safety risk with implications for patient care. There is a risk that a pregnant patient could be prescribed a drug that is harmful during pregnancy because the prescriber is not shown a pregnancy-related prescribing warning. Some mitigation for this risk is currently available in that prescribing in pregnancy is known to be a high-risk area and clinicians often check reference materials (UKTIS, BNF, drug manufacturer’s SPC) before prescribing for safety, rather than relying solely on electronic prescribing decision support, however that does rely on the prescribing clinician being aware that the patient is pregnant, which they may not be.
As mitigation, we are currently in the process of establishing a development fix that will prevent any further occurrences of this issue and that will be implemented via a future Vision Anywhere software release.
In the meantime, we would ask that practices are mindful of the fact that prescribers will not be shown pregnancy-related prescribing warnings in Vision Anywhere when prescribing to pregnant patients.
